Kathmandu : The Bagmati River having religious importance is considered a shrine in Hindu and Buddhist religions. Now parks are being built on the premises of some temples in the vicinity of the Bagmati River.

The High-Powered Committee for the Integrated Development of the Bagmati Civilization has laid emphasis on constructing parks to keep environment of the Kathmandu Valley clean and green, conserve the historical, archeological and cultural heritages related to river system and identify and protect entire Bagmati civilization. The UN Park that was established in 2052 BS in Jwagal, Lalitpur is now under the ownership of the Committee.

Works are being undertaken to beautify the UN Park having greenery in its surrounding. Its Information Officer Kamal Aryal informed that various parks have been already constructed along the Bagmati River and some are in progress. Around 1,576 ropani land under the UN Park has come under the ownership of the Committee. He further shared, “There are altogether 31 parks, including big and small along the Bagmati corridor.

We have leased some of our land to different organizations for park management purpose for definite period. The organizations have constructed parks in different names”. The parks along the Bagmati corridor have been constructed by extracting soil from the river. The soil swept away by the Bagmati River forms mound and sneaked into the human settlements and parks during flooding. With the extraction of soil and sand piled up in the river bed, it helps smooth flow of river water and also reduces risks to the human settlements and parks in the vicinity.

Construction of park nearby the corridor also helps maintain the cleanliness of the river. No ticket arrangement has been placed for the entrance to the newly-constructed parks. A small amount is being charged for the shooting of music video. The Committee said ticket arrangement would further make the park management effective. The Committee further shared that all the parks would be handed over to the metropolitan cities for sound management and preservation once the construction works are completed.
