Tegucigalpa : At least 41 women died in a riot that occurred in a women’s prison in Honduras on Tuesday. According to police officials, the clash between two groups resulted in their deaths. The Guardian reported that the violence in the prison in Honduras, known for illegal activities, led to the death of at least 41 female inmates, with many being burned to death.
Yuri Mora, spokesperson for Honduras’ National Police Investigations Agency, stated that most of the prisoners were set on fire during the confrontation.
However, reports also suggest that inmates in a prison located approximately 30 miles northwest of the capital, Tegucigalpa, were shot by authorities.
Julisa Villanueva, head of the country’s prison system, attributed the violence to efforts made by officials to control illegal activities within the prison. She mentioned that the violence occurred as a result of a crackdown on organized groups within the prison.
She also stated that the organized groups within the prison had practiced their extensive control.
