Kathmandu: Today, various programs are being organized in Nepal to celebrate International Yoga Day. International Yoga Day is celebrated every year on June 21st with various awareness-raising programs.

According to the decision made by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014, International Yoga Day was officially celebrated from June 21, 2015. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the declaration of International Yoga Day during the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly, stating that yoga is necessary for the well-being of all. After receiving initial support from the then Prime Minister of Nepal, Sushil Koirala, permanent member countries of the United Nations, including the European Union, expressed their support.

International Yoga Day has gained recognition with the support of 177 countries within a span of 90 days since its announcement. Since 2016, International Yoga Day has been celebrated worldwide on June 21st.

In Nepal, Yoga Day was initially celebrated on the day of Surya Uttarayan (the first day of Magh) from the year 2036. Nepal Sanskrit University teaches yoga and natural medicine for six months.

Before the year 2036, efforts were made to revive yoga, which had almost disappeared in Nepal, by declaring a day for raising awareness.

In ancient times, yoga, meditation, and Ayurveda were considered essential for mental peace, stability, and well-being. With the influence of the modern era, Nepalis have become more inclined towards utilizing yoga for treatment and well-being, following the examples of Europe and America.

After celebrating World Yoga Day on January 1st, following June 21st, the campaign workers in Nepal proposed declaring Magh 1st as National Yoga Day, and the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction announced it in the Council of Ministers.

As the winter solstice holds significance for yoga and meditation practices, the government declared Magh 1st, which corresponds to Makar Sankranti, as National Yoga Day. Currently, Magh 1st is celebrated as National Yoga Day in Nepal, along with June 21st, which is celebrated as International Yoga Day
