Kathmandu : Nepali national football team’s captain Kiran Chemjong has signed a contract with Punjab FC for an additional one year. Punjab has extended Kiran’s role to boost their position in the Indian Super League (ISL) after winning the I-League, the second-tier league in India. The contract with Punjab is valid until the 2024 season, which will run from September 2023 to March 2024.
Punjab FC is the first club to receive a promotion to the ISL. The ISL will have a total of 12 teams competing this time.
Kiran has been signed by Punjab for the Asian quota. In the ISL, each team can have six foreign players, including one Asian player.
Kiran, who played his first season in Punjab for the I-League, has the possibility of making his ISL debut with the first match. If that happens, he will be the second Nepali player to feature in the ISL. Previously, Ananta Tamang played one match in the ISL for East Bengal.
Kiran holds the record of playing the most matches for Nepal, a total of 89 games.
