Kathmandu: The Curriculum Development Center has made public the Internal Evaluation Criteria for students studying in 2080. The center has announced that the basis for internal evaluation has been prepared to make the evaluation process more scientific.

Earlier, when the new curriculum was implemented, the schools used to allocate 25% marks based on internal evaluation and 75% marks based on the external examination given by the students. However, after schools started giving grades to students based on their daily activities rather than conducting daily assessments, the center has decided to set criteria for evaluating the students’ activities, participation, and presentation. According to the Director and Information Officer of the Curriculum Development Center, Dr. Baburam Dhungana, “Previously, the schools used to evaluate students’ performance by just looking at their faces, but now that is not possible. The marks for internal evaluation will be based on the students’ performance in their creative and project work, as well as their presentation skills (speaking, listening, and reading assessment).”

The evaluation of creative and project work will be graded from 4 to 19, and the trimester examination will be graded from 6 to a total of 25 points for internal evaluation. The criteria will also include different indicators as per the evaluation. This change has been demanded by the Director and Information Officer Dhungana of the center, who believes that this will bring significant improvements in the students’ results. Now, with students and parents being aware of the evaluation process every month, they will be able to rectify the results. He says, “From the beginning, when students evaluate their performance based on their activities, they will be able to understand why they received 23, while they expected 15, and even parents will understand easily. It is easy for teachers to give suggestions for improvement.”

According to the revised curriculum, evaluation will encourage students to learn and enhance learning through regular assessment and provide a well-organized, subject-specific, scientific, and unbiased system.
