Kathmandu: After a splendid performance by Lionel Messi, Inter Miami defeated Cincinnati in a penalty shootout to advance to the final of the US Open Cup football tournament.
After securing the title of the league cup just a week ago, Messi’s Inter Miami has now reached the final of a consecutive competition.
The game ended in a 3-3 draw after the regular 90 minutes and an additional 30 minutes of extra time. The match proceeded to a penalty shootout.
Messi showcased an excellent performance for Inter Miami, scoring two goals in the first 68 minutes. His partnership with Leonardo Campana led to a goal in the 68th minute and another during injury time, leveling the game for Inter Miami.
In the third minute of extra time, Joseph Martinez scored a goal to give Inter Miami a 3-2 lead. However, Yuya Kubo’s equalizing goal for Cincinnati brought the game to a thrilling 3-3 draw.
In the penalty shootout, Inter Miami’s goalkeeper, Brad Guzan, emerged as the hero. He saved Cincinnati’s final penalty from Nick Hagglund. Benjamin Kramaric then converted the last penalty for Inter Miami, securing a 5-4 victory. Messi also scored his penalty in the shootout.
Now, Inter Miami will face the winner of the second semifinal between Houston Dynamo and Real Salt Lake in the final of the US Open Cup. The final is scheduled for September 27.
