Morocco : In Morocco, a powerful earthquake has resulted in an estimated death toll of two thousand. International news outlets have reported that, as of now, two thousand one hundred and two people have lost their lives in the earthquake.
The earthquake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, struck the southwestern region of Marrakech, causing extensive damage to physical structures. The estimated death toll is expected to rise further.
According to international reports, most casualties have occurred in the Al Haouz region. Thousands of buildings have been destroyed by the earthquake.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing in affected areas. Among those injured in the earthquake, the condition of one thousand four hundred and four individuals is reported to be serious.
In the aftermath of the earthquake, many homes in Marrakech have collapsed, and villages in remote mountainous regions have been transformed into open fields. King Mohammed VI of Morocco has issued an appeal for aid and assistance to help the affected. The national flag is flying at half-mast to honor the deceased.
This earthquake is the largest to hit Morocco in twenty years. Previously, in 2004, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck the city of Al Hoceima, resulting in the deaths of 630 people.
